Our new innovative wipes use packaging that contains 80% less plastic than our traditional canisters. Plus, our new biodegradable and compostable wipes are made with plant-based fibres and do not contain plastic. That means our wipes will decompose in a matter of weeks after being disposed of properly in home or municipal compost (for municipal composting/green bin programs, check locally before putting wipes in the green bin as appropriate facilities may not exist in your area). Our new wipes are thus reducing plastic waste in Canada every year, while still being just as effective.

Compostable materials can degrade into CO2, water, and biomass if placed in the right conditions (like in a home compost bin with the recommended ratio of compost to wipe, as per the usage directions). On the other hand, non-compostable materials don’t readily degrade in a compost bin and can contribute to landfill waste.

Lysol® wipes are biodegradable and compostable in home and municipal compost as per ASTM D6868. For municipal composting/green bin programs, check locally before putting wipes in the green bin as appropriate facilities may not exist in your area. Lysol® is working diligently with municipal partners and other stakeholders to improve acceptance of its biodegradable and compostable wipes. If you do not have access to a green bin program, or where your municipality is presently unable to accept compostable wipes, please consider starting a home compost using the directions below.

While Lysol® strongly recommends composting, if you don’t have access to the appropriate facilities, briefly rinse the used wipe under running water before disposing of it in the trash (tested as per ASTM D5511) to facilitate degradation.

For home composting, do not compost if used to clean non-compostable messes, such as human or animal waste. Wipes should generally be no more than 10% of your home compost pile. While Lysol® strongly recommends composting, if you don’t have access to appropriate facilities, to facilitate biodegradation briefly rinse the used wipe under running water before disposing in the trash.

The time it takes for a wipe to decompose will vary depending on compost conditions. Under ambient home compost conditions, wipes can decompose in as little as 6 weeks.
